It's the perfect time to celebrate and champion the incredible initiatives that empower women across various sectors in South Africa. These programmes not only provide employment but also foster skills development, entrepreneurship, and economic empowerment, creating a ripple effect of positive change in business and society. Here are six exemplary women-led initiatives that are making a significant impact.

1. Relate Bracelets

Relate Bracelets is a social enterprise that empowers women by providing employment opportunities in the crafting of bracelets. These bracelets support numerous charitable causes, blending economic empowerment with social good. Women from disadvantaged backgrounds are trained in skills that enhance their employability, while also contributing to meaningful causes. The initiative is a testament to how small businesses can drive big changes, promoting sustainability and social responsibility.

2. Graça Machel Trust’s Women Creating Wealth (WCW) Entrepreneurship Programme

The Women Creating Wealth (WCW) programme by the Graça Machel Trust is designed to support African women entrepreneurs. It provides comprehensive training, mentorship, and networking opportunities aimed at accelerating business growth. Participants gain access to a community of like-minded women, fostering a supportive environment that encourages wealth creation and business success. The programme exemplifies the power of collective effort and shared knowledge in driving entrepreneurial success.

3. Social Coding

Social Coding, founded by Thembi Magajana, focuses on bridging the technology gap in rural communities by teaching the youth to code. This initiative not only equips them with valuable tech skills but also inspires them to pursue careers in technology, breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes. Social Coding is a powerful example of how targeted education and empowerment can transform lives and communities.

4. Iron Women Programme

The Iron Women Programme, part of the Women Inspiring Women to Lead in Transport initiative, trains women to become commercial vehicle drivers. Supported by Volvo and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), this programme addresses the gender gap in the transport sector by providing both theoretical and practical training. By enhancing the capacity of women drivers, the programme contributes to safer, more efficient transport services and opens up new career opportunities for women.

5. Women in Mining South Africa (WiMSA)

WiMSA creates a network to support women working in the mining industry through education, skills development, mentorship, and representation. Regular events and a strong mentoring programme help women in mining to navigate their careers and overcome industry-specific challenges. WiMSA's efforts ensure that women are not just participants but leaders in the mining sector, driving innovation and growth from within (International Women in Mining.

6. Entrepreneurs' Network Cape Town(EN)

The Entrepreneurs' Network Cape Town (EN), led by Dawn Nathan-Jones, is dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship by creating opportunities for all aspiring business leaders to get in the right room with the right people. Dawn's vision is to level the playing field, ensuring there are no barriers to entry, and making it possible for everyone, especially those from less fortunate communities, to grow their networks and their businesses. EN hosts networking events, seminars, and training programmes in various communities, offering invaluable support and resources to entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds.

Conclusion

These initiatives highlight the incredible potential of women when given the right opportunities and support. By championing education, entrepreneurship, and skills development, they are not only transforming individual lives but also contributing to broader economic and social change. As we celebrate Women’s Day, let’s acknowledge and support these efforts, recognising that empowering women is key to building a more inclusive and prosperous society.
